'Didn't his vet literally just tell you to put him on a diet?' Cat-sitter calls out her sister for overfeeding her already-chonky cat, the sister immediately has a meltdown, saying that putting a cat on a diet is cruelty

Chonky cats. A subject of much debate on the internet. Because the internet, sometimes, has a difficult time with nuance. Some chonky cats are adorable and are not, in fact, too chonky. Some cats are simply a little larger than others, and we do our best to keep their weight from getting worse, but that is just what they are, and we are not going to love them any less because of it. Heck, the more cat, the more cat there is to love in situations like that. But, a cat's weight is still something that you have to keep an eye on. 

Some cats don't know how to regulate their food intake the way that they perhaps should. And so, it is up to us - to measure their food, to give it to them in intervals, to listen to our vet's guidance. And yes, there is indeed such a thing as overfeeding your cats. The sitter in this story was right to call her sister our for it. Now, it's just a matter of making her listen.

    About a month ago, her cat Loki had a heath scare because of his weight and she was told to put him on a diet. Obviously she has not put him on a diet.

    jkuzuz I just want to say, your mom is also being derelict in her responsibilities. If you live with your teenage child and that child has a pet, guess what? It's your pet too. Your mom should have intervened long ago but now that the situation is what it is, your mom is really best positioned to try to get your sister to see reason. I can easily imagine an 18 year old not knowing how to care for a pet; I just cannot imagine as a grown adult letting my kid care for an animal in this way, under m

    divorcedbbmama OP My moms allergic to cats too, and I know my sister tries to hide her cat when my mom comes around cause how fat he is lol. I sent my mom the pic of him earlier and she said “holy sh how has that big f been living under my house and I had no idea?" lol. I don't think she really knew just how big he was either. She told me she'd call me later and we'd try to both come together and come up with a plan to talk. to my sister when they're home from vacation

  • There 100% is such a thing as overfeeding your cat. Sure, more often than not, cats are able to stop themselves and only eat as much as they need throughout the day, but that's not true for all of them. And the cats that can't do it themselves do need their food watched and measured for them.

    divorcedbbmama OP No I don't think it's anything like that, she has another cat that is normal cat size, but she lets them eat as much as they want. I guess the other cat saw Loki and decided she wanted to have a hot girl summer and decided to not overeat lol

  • And ignoring your vet's advice is just about the worst thing that you could do to your pets. They say what they say for a reason. And if it's gotten to the point that your vet told you that your cat needs to be put on a diet, then that is what needs to be done.

    divorcedbbmama OP We had a cat when I was a kid and it ran away. We found it and it was almost starved to death and almost did. I think that's why she lets them eat whatever amount they want because she's scared it would happen again, but that was over 13 years ago
